SUMMARY:Belly Dancing Costume Workshop with Saren
DESCRIPTION:Dressing up is not only tons of fun\, it is an integral part of belly dance performance. This evening’s belly dancing class is dedicated to the elements of standard ATS costuming including discussion of the meaning of different pieces\, styles and layering techniques. Sewing machines\, patterns\, and sewing help will be available for anyone ready to dive in to creating their own costume masterpiece! The list of costume pieces and a supplies list is below. \nThe standard ATS costume is derived from various traditional tribal costuming resources. The basic costume consists of: \n\npantaloons\none or more tiered 10–25 yard skirts\,\na choli (traditional top with an open back) with short or long sleeves\na coin bra\na headdress\, hair scarf\,  or hair decorations\none or more hip scarves with yarn\, tassels or fringe\na belt\, also with yarn\, tassels or fringe\nbig jewelry and lots of it!!!\n\nPatterns and resources will be available for all of the costume pieces. Due to the amount of time allotted for this program\, the two pieces we will be creating are pantaloons and tassel belts. \nPantaloon supplies: \n\n4 yards x 45″ (or wider) of light weight fabric such as cotton\, lawn\, taffeta\, etc.\n1  1/2″ elastic long enough to go around your waist without stretching\n22″ of 1/4 inch elastic\n\nTassel belt: \n\nOne piece of fabric 45″ x 45″ wide\n1-3 skeins of yarn (depending on how many tassels you would like) in a complimentary color\n\nIf you have any questions or concerns\, please don’t hesitate to call the Library at (563)263-3065 and speak with Saren or email Saren at sblack@muscatineiowa.gov \n

DESCRIPTION:Belly dancing with the amazing Melanie Moore is back by popular demand! Great for all fitness levels\, these classes are designed for all people who have never danced before\, people who have danced but not explored this style\, and for perfection and review of technique for dancers already familiar with American Tribal Style belly dance. Level 1 includes a minimum of one slow and one fast move per class\, and a review of the moves already covered. As classes progress\, we add all the moves together\, learning transitions and combinations. We learn to recognize the cues used for this group improvisational style. We also learn a basic zill (finger cymbals) pattern to accompany Level 1 dancing. Loaner zills are available in class. Each class also includes stretching and strengthening moves. \nThere is no registration required\, just remember to wear comfortable clothing! This program is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Lecture 2: Religions of the Middle East: Misunderstandings and/or the Unknown \nFirst\, a look at the relatively unknown: the Bahai\, Druze\, Christian groups such as the Coptic Church; and Muslims such as the Sufi and Shi’ites.  Second\, the misunderstood. Why do some Americans have negative views of Islam and Muslims? Do Americans know and understand the tenants of Islam and the dictates of being a Muslim?
