Michael Anson came to Muscatine in 1848 from St. Louis, Missouri. He was born in Cashel, Ireland in 1809. In 1852, he was married in Muscatine. On February 22, 1893 he died.

Patrick Anson came to Muscatine in 1849 from St. Louis, Missouri. He was born in Cashel, Ireland in 1824. In 1857 he was married. Mr. Anson moved to California and died in Alameda in 1905. He was an old veteran.

Arnold, Captain Leonard
Captain Leonard Arnold came to Port Louisa in 1846 and moved to Muscatine in 1858. On June 5, 1822 he was born in Schnornbach, Germany. In 1845 he married. His death occurred December 28, 1898.
Captain Arnold was the captain of the first ferry boat operating at this point. The boat was called the “Muscatine” and carried passengers across the river back and forth from Illinois. This information was located in his son George’s obituary. Captain Arnold was also in the wood, coal and sand business. Arnold, George
George Arnold is the son of Captain Leonard Arnold. He came to Muscatine in 1858. His birth took place in Quincy, Illinois, April 19, 1846. On September 28, 1883 he married Miss Helen Lysen in Muscatine. He died February 22, 1905.
Like his father, George Arnold worked on steamboats and became captain of the steamboat Holston in 1870. He served on the Muscatine City Council for 6 years. Was a member of the Muscatine Sand Company. His obituary appeared in the Muscatine Journal February 24, 1905 page 12. His wife Helen was the organist at St. Mathias Church for 30 years. Dr. Philip A. Austin came to Muscatine in 1861. He was born in Marden, County Kent, England January 28, 1834. On March 25, 1857 he was married in Sparta, Kentucky. His death occurred February 15, 1911.

Mrs. Philip A. Austin’s maiden name was Susan Green. She was born in Kentucky. She came to Muscatine with her husband Dr. Philip A. Austin in 1861. After her husband’s death she moved to California.
A death announcement for Mrs. Austin can be located in the Muscatine Journal February 3, 1938 page 3. In the March 25, 1908 Muscatine Journal page 2 an article was published regarding Mr. and Mrs. Philip A. Austin’s 51st wedding anniversary.

Baird, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. (Elizabeth B. Hill)
R. B. Baird and wife Elizabeth, maiden last name Hill, married in 1862. He came to Muscatine in 1859. Mr. Baird was born in Jeffersonville, Indian December 1837. He died August 18, 1910. Mrs. Baird was born in Newport, Rhode Island June 1842. She died in Chicago, Illinois October 22, 1925. Mr. Baird was a Civil War veteran.
The initial “R” stands for Robert. He was the commander of the Shelby Norman Post in Muscatine. He traveled for the Chambers Lumber Company and later Huttig Manufacturing Company. His obituary can be found in the August 23, 1910 page 8 Muscatine Journal. There was a death announcement that appeared for Mrs. Baird in the October 23, 1925 page 10 Muscatine Journal. According to cemetery records both are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Baker, Harvey
Harvey Baker came to Muscatine County in 1845. He was born in Stonelick, Ohio February 20, 1822. On April 11, 1843 he married Harriet Freeman in New Palestine, Indiana. Mr. Baker died January 19, 1895. Mrs. Baker was born on August 9, 1823 and died April 5, 1894.
Mr. Baker was a farmer in Fulton Township where he served on the County Board of Supervisors. His obituary can be located in the January 20, 1895 Muscatine News-Tribune page 1. Banks, General Lyman
Colonel Lyman Banks came to Muscatine in 1842 with his parents. He married in Muscatine on July 4, 1868. His death occurred near Seattle, Washington in 1915 at the age of 72.
In all the newspaper articles Lyman was referred to as “General” not “Colonel.” He served 4 years in the Civil War and was one time Brigadier General of the Iowa National Guard. General Banks was foreman of the Muscatine Relief Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 and served as Muscatine County Treasurer from 1879-1882. Banks, Mrs. Lyman (Emmeline Hershe)
Mrs. Banks, maiden name Emmeline Hershe, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania July 4, 1844. She died in Seattle, Washington in 1903. She was the daughter of Jacob Hershe.
Most sources spell Emmeline’s maiden name “Hershey” not “Hershe.” While in Seattle, Washington Emmeline managed a day nursery, an institution founded for the care of children while their mothers were at work. Also, she was active with the Y.W.C.A. Her obituary appeared in the June 28, 1903 Muscatine News-Tribune page 1. The website Find a Grave shows that she is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Seattle, King County, Washington.

Barnard, John
John Barnard came to Muscatine in 1852. He was born in Wheeling, West Virginia June 6, 1822. In October 1847, he was married in Zanesville, Ohio. He died March 31, 1901.

Martin Bartlett came to Muscatine in 1849. He was born in Virginia in 1832. On January 27, 1875 he was married. His death occurred May 8, 1897. He is shown holding his son Howard in this photograph.
Started out as a farmer but turned his attention to the pork packing industry. His obituary appeared in the May 9, 1897 page 1, Muscatine News-Tribune. Not mentioned in Mr. Bartlett’s caption is that he married Miss Rebecca Orr Hoopes in 1867. Rebecca was the daughter of Lindley and Mary Addleman Hoopes. Her death occurred in February 1870. No children were born to this marriage. She is buried in High Prairie Cemetery, Muscatine, Muscatine County, Iowa. The marriage referred to in the caption is to Sultana Fulliam his second wife.

Bartlett, Mrs. Martin (Sultana Fulliam)
Mrs. Martin Bartlett, nee Sultana Fulliam was born in Muscatine. She was the daughter of Dr. G.W. Fulliam and his first wife Eliza Morford Fulliam.

In the typed caption that accompanies the photograph Mrs. Beil’s name is given as “Catherine Huckey.” Catherine Huckey is actually her mother’s maiden name. Mrs. Bernhard Beil’s maiden name was Anna Catherine Wiegand. The rest of the information in the caption is correct. An obituary for Anna can be found in the Muscatine Journal May 16, 1922 page 7. Bennett, Joseph
Joseph Bennett came to Muscatine in 1839 from St. Louis, Missouri. On December 5, 1817 he was born in Lunenburg, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He married in 1845. His death occurred April 15, 1906.
In 1850, he started the first flour mill in the city of Muscatine. Also, was responsible for building the first steamboat ever constructed in the city using it as a freight packet. On May 24, 1857, he organized the Green Street Mission and served as the Sunday School Superintendent for over 20 years. His obituary appeared in the April 17, 1906 page 5 Muscatine Journal. Cemetery records indicate he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Bennett, Mrs. Joseph (Elizabeth Schenck)
Mrs. Joseph Bennett’s was the former Miss Elizabeth Schenck of Dayton, Ohio. She died in July 1881. She was the sister of James F. Schenck.
There is a significant difference regarding the date of her death in the caption and the actual date of her death on August 10, 1872. An obituary for Mrs. Bennett appeared in the August 16, 1872 Muscatine Journal on page 3. Cemetery records indicate that she is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Berkshire, Montgomery M.
Montgomery M. Berkshire came to Muscatine in 1837. He was born in Ohio in 1813 and died in Muscatine, Iowa May 2, 1884. He married Miss Zerilda Palmer, who was the daughter of Captain James Palmer, in Muscatine. She died December 1863.
When searching for Mr. Berkshire’s obituary use the search term “M. M. Berkshire.” His obituary can be found in the Muscatine Daily Journal dated May 3, 1884 page 2. There was a correction to Mr. Berkshire’s obituary in the May 9, 1884 page 7 Muscatine Journal. Apparently it was reported that he was a Democrat when in fact he was a “radical Republican.” The December 7, 1863 Muscatine Journal carried a brief announcement of Mrs. Bilkey’s death. However, her name appeared to be spelled differently but all other information indicated that this was Zerilda. Cemetery records indicate that both husband and wife are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Bilkey Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Joseph (Joanna Weber)
Joseph Bilkey Sr, came to Muscatine in 1855. He was born in Budapest, Hungry in 1827 and his death occurred on March 3, 1893 in Muscatine, Iowa. His wife, the former Miss Joanna Weber, is shown seated next to him in the photograph. They were married in Newark, New Jersey. Mrs. Bilkey was born in Wurtemburg, Germany in 1834 and died in Muscatine, Iowa February 12, 1909.
Mr. Bilkey’s occupation was a harness maker. There is an article in the January 1, 1893 page 3 Muscatine Semi-Weekly News Tribune that mentions the “Bilkey Block” of which Mr. Joseph Bilkey and Son invested in real estate in the business and residential parts of the city of Muscatine. An obituary appeared in the March 4, 1893, page 1 Muscatine News-Tribune for Mr. Bilkey. Mrs. Bilkey’s obituary can be located in the February 12, 1909 Muscatine Journal page 2. Both are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa and their headstone appears on the website Find a Grave. One more item of note is that in all the newspaper articles Mrs. Bilkey’s first name is referred to as Johanna but her headstone and this caption reads “Joanna.”

Bishop, Jacob A.
Jacob A. Bishop came to Muscatine in 1859. On February 27, 1825 he was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He married his first wife on September 1, 1849. His second wife was named Miss Margaret Kincaid. Mr. Bishop died on March 22, 1905. Mrs. Margaret Bishop, his second wife, died April 20, 1922.
Jacob Bishop was a grocer. He was also one of the incorporators of the Muscatine Water Works Company and served for many years as one of its directors. An obituary can be located for him in the March 22, 1905 Muscatine Journal on page 5. His second wife Margaret’s obituary is located in the Muscatine Journal April 22, 1922 page 10. She served for a number of years on the board of directors for the Old Ladies Home in Muscatine, Iowa. Mrs. J.A. Bishop, the former Miss Rebecca Kitzmiller, was the first wife of Jacob A. Bishop. She came to Muscatine in 1859. She was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, March 7, 1828 and her death occurred March 16, 1879.

Bitzer, Galbraith
Galbraith Bitzer came to Muscatine in 1853. He was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania August 28, 1836. On July 5, 1862 he married. His death occurred on May 24, 1914. He was a veteran of the Civil War.
Mr. Bitzer was a carpenter by trade but after the Civil War he worked as a butcher and then around 1879 he opened a grocery store. Furthermore, he helped organize the Rescue Fire company serving as foreman from 1876-1887. An obituary appeared for Mr. Bitzer in the May 25, 1914 page 8 Muscatine Journal. Henry Bitzer came to Muscatine in 1853. Born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania on October 19, 1844. In 1877, he married in Muscatine. His death occurred November 27, 1909. His mother was Mrs. Barbara Bitzer.
According to his obituary Henry tried his hand at several different occupations but was perhaps best know for his association with the marble business. Bitzer, Martin
Martin Bitzer came to Muscatine in 1853. He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on February 16, 1827, On April 1, 1879 he was married in Lisbon, Iowa. His bride was Elizabeth Neidig of Linn County. Mr. Bitzer died March 4, 1903.

There are some dates and spellings that are wrong in the caption. The dates of death should be 1881 for Samuel and his obituary appeared in the Muscatine Journal on February 25, 1881 page 3. The spelling for Susan could be “Susann” or “Susannah”. Her first name is spelled “Susann” on her headstone. Cadle, Cornelius
Cornelius Cadle came to Muscatine in 1843. He was born in New York City, New York on March 11, 1809. In 1835, he married his first wife. On March 4, 1849 he married his second wife. His death occurred on March 11, 1886.

Miss Ruth Lamphrey was the second wife of Cornelius Cadle. She was born in Oxford, New Hampshire on January 16, 1820. She came to Muscatine in 1849. Her death occurred April 12, 1885. She is the mother of Henry and Abbie Cadle.
Mrs. Cadle was the President of the County Soldiers’ Aid Society, one of the incorporators of the Iowa Soldiers’ Orphans’ Home, and chief solicitor for the soldiers’ monument in front of the Muscatine Court House, which was the first monument of its kind to be erected in the state of Iowa. Mrs. Richard Cadle, the former Miss Jane Sarah Magoon was born in Lancaster, Ohio April 27, 1828. She died in Colorado. She is the daughter of Isaac and Hannah Magoon.
An obituary could not be located for Mrs. Cadle. However, cemetery records show that she is buried in Zillah Cemetery, Zillah, Yakima County, Washington. Richard Cadle came to Muscatine in 1843. On February 20, 1819 he was born in New York City, New York. His marriage occurred October 5, 1847. He died at Monte Vista, Colorado April 9, 1895.
Mr. Cadle was engaged in the lumber industry for many years and also served as City Clerk during his residency in Muscatine, Iowa. He was a Civil War veteran. Mrs. J.H. Canon was the former Miss Rhoda Smalley. On March 5, 1837 she was born in Carthage, Ohio. She came in 1839 to Muscatine. She is the daughter of Andrew Smalley.

Carskaddan, Jerome
erome Carskaddan came to Muscatine in 1853. On November 6, 1829 he was born near Seneca Falls, New York. In 1854, he married Marilla Brown. Mr. Carskaddan died October 23, 1912. Mrs. Carskaddan was born on October 11, 1831 in Morrisville, New York and she died August 13, 1913.
Jerome Carskaddan was an attorney and judge. He was the attorney for Alexander Clark. Mr. Carskaddan’s obituary appeared in the October 25, 1912 page 4 Muscatine Journal. Chambers, Anderson
Anderson Chambers came to Muscatine in 1836. He was born in Indiana, November 26, 1820. On November 4, 1895 he died in Englewood, Illinois. He was married three time. His second wife, Mary Proser, died in 1878. His third wife was born in Texas and died in 1901.
Mr. Chambers was connected with the firms of Dunsmore & Chambess and the Chambers Bros. These businesses were involved in dry goods, saw mill, pork packing and grain elevators. His obituary can be located in the November 8, 1895 page 3 Muscatine Journal.
A death announcement for his second wife, Mary, appeared in the January 18, 1878 page 3 Muscatine Journal and a sketch of her life appeared in the Muscatine Journal January 25, 1878 on page1. Vincent Chambers came to Muscatine in 1836. He was born in Indiana on November 30, 1816. In 1854, he married Margaret K. Neely. He died February 19, 1889. Margaret was born in Salem, Indiana 1827 and died December 25, 1897 in Chicago, Illinois.

William C. Clapp sits on the far left and Mrs. B. Clapp sits on the extreme right in this photograph. They came to Muscatine in 1862. He was born in Montage, Massachusetts July 4, 1814. He died December 16, 1906. Mrs. Clapp was born in Massachusetts on November 14, 1815 and died January 24, 1915 at the age of 99.
Mr. Clapp was in the hardware business in Muscatine. His obituary can be located in the Muscatine Journal dated December 18, 1906 on page 10. Clemens, Mrs. Jane
Mrs. Jane Clemens, the mother of “Mark Twain,” was born in Virginia. She came to Muscatine from Missouri with her three sons. She lived in Muscatine from 1852 to 1855.

Clemens, Sam
Came to Muscatine in 1853 when he worked for Mahin & Clemens, publishers of the Muscatine Journal.
Sam Clemens brother Orion had purchased an interest in the newspaper in 1853. One source stated that Sam worked as a printer for the paper from 1853-54. Then he left Muscatine.

Clemens, Samuel L
“Mark Twain” was born in Florida, Missouri November 10, 1835. He died at Redding, Connecticut April 21, 1910. In his book Life on the Mississippi he says of Muscatine, “I lived there awhile, many years ago, but the place, now, had a rather unfamiliar look…I remember it as a small place, which it is not now. And I remember Muscatine, still most pleasantly, for it’s summer sunsets, I have never seen any on either side of the ocean to equal them.” This is the last picture of Samuel L. Clemens.

Clemens Home (Henry Cadle in Front)
This is a photograph of 109 Walnut Street where Jane Clemens and her sons, Orion, Henry and Samuel lived when residing in Muscatine, Iowa. The house was located on the east side of Walnut Street just south of the alley between 2nd and Front Streets. In 1926, the house was still standing. This photograph was taken by Neily Cadle and Henry Cadle is standing in front. Mrs. Charles Cadle, when a little girl, then Hattie Swan, often visited the Clemens and sat on Mrs. Clemens lap.
On February 10, 1940 page 10 the Muscatine Journal published an article about restoring the Clemens home, as it was called, and moving it to Riverfront Park. However, the cost was too high to preserve it so it was razed for a new filing station. To read more about this see the article in the April 3, 1940 Muscatine Journal page 6.

Cloud, David Comer (D.C.)
David Comer Cloud came to Muscatine in 1839. He was born in Champaign County, Ohio January 29, 1817. His first wife was Arietta Dibble and she died in 1846. On November 28, 1848 he married his second wife. His death occurred on July 10, 1903. He was the ex Attorney General of Iowa.
In 1852, David Comer (D.C.) Cloud was elected the first Attorney General of the State of Iowa. He held this office until 1856. His obituary can be located in the Muscatine News-Tribune July 11, 1903 page 1. Mr. Cloud’s first wife was named Arietta Dibble, his second wife was Harriet Miranda Morrow, and his third wife was Henrietta M. Quinn. Cloud, Mrs. D.C. (Mrs. Harriet Miranda Marrow)
The second wife of Mr. David Comer (D.C.) Cloud was the former Mrs. Harriet Miranda Morrow. She was the widow of Dr. James G. Morrow. In 1839, she came to Muscatine from Bennington, Vermont. Her death occurred June 15, 1880. She was the daughter of William R. Olds.
On April 30, 1880 page 3 of the Muscatine Journal an article appeared regarding Mrs. Cloud’s illness. A memoriam article was in the June 18, 1880 page 3 Muscatine Journal.

Cobb, Dr. S.M.
Dr. S.M. Cobb came to Muscatine in 1860. Born in Cumberland County, Maine on February 4, 1819. His first wife was Mary C. Bradbury of Buxton, Maine. Mary died in 1851. On December 26, 1852 he married his second wife. He died December 12, 1892. He was a Civil War veteran serving as a surgeon during the war.
Dr. Cobb’s initials stand for “Stephen Meserve.” He was a doctor when he lived in Muscatine. An obituary can be located in the Muscatine Semi-Weekly News Tribune December 14, 1892 page 14. Miss Harriet S. Mitchell, was the second wife of Dr. S.M. Cobb. She was born in York County, Maine May 27, 1831. She came to Muscatine with her husband in 1860. Her death occurred on July 21, 1889.

Solomon Conaway came to Muscatine in 1846. He was born in Walkersville, Maryland December 25, 1807 and died March 21, 1900. In 1837 he married Ann Rebecca Dixon. She was born in Walkersville, Maryland on September 26, 1815 and died December 8, 1892.

The name is wrong in the caption. It has been changed in the caption to the correct order of his name. Mr. Brewster’s occupation was a banker. Couch, Moses
Moses Couch came to Muscatine in 1836. He was born in Redding, Connecticut March 20, 1803. On January 17, 1830 he was married in Connecticut. He died September 23, 1879.

Mrs. Moses Couch, the former Miss Mary A. Plum, is the woman on the left in this photograph. She came to Muscatine in 1837. On July 26, 1809 she was born in Connecticut. She died at the age of 93 on December 9, 1902. The woman on the right is Miss Mary Hart. She came to Muscatine in 1848. On March 12, 1827 she was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Her death occurred February 22, 1920.
According to Mrs. Couch’s obituary Mary Plum was her companion who had lived with her for 24 years. Mrs. Couch arrived in Muscatine, then called Bloomington, on the first boat that came up the river after the opening of navigation. Crane, S. Burt
S. Burt Crane came to Muscatine in 1851. His death occurred on April 7, 1865 at the age of 50. At the time of his death, he was an alderman on the city council.

Cummins, Colonel F. Markoe
Colonel F. Markoe Cummins came to Muscatine in 1852. In 1822, he was born in Florida, New York. He was a veteran of the Mexican War. Also served in the Civil War. He was Captain of Company A, 1st Iowa, Lieutenant Colonel 6th Iowa, Colonel 124th Regiment. In 1865, he went to Orange County, New York. His death occurred in 1886.

Cummins, Mrs. Thomas (Ann(a)) Martin)
Mrs. Thomas Cummins, the former Miss Ann Martin, was born December 15, 1839 in New York state. Came to Muscatine from Aumoda County, New York. She was the daughter of John Martin.
According to Mrs. Cummins obituary and cemetery records her first name is written as “Anna” not “Ann.” Not sure about the Aumoda County, New York information in the caption. Her obituary appeared in the Muscatine Journal March 16, 1928 on page 10. Cemetery records indicate that she is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Cummins, Thomas H.
Thomas H. Cummins (Shammo & Cummins), came to Muscatine in 1856. He was born September 2, 1839 in West Brookfield, Ohio. Mr. Cummins was married in 1859. His death occurred on February 23, 1896.
Mr. Cummins was a partner in a wholesale grocery store that went by the name “Shammo and Cummins.” During the Civil War, he was a drum major in the 1st Iowa Regiment. Curran, Mrs. Thomas (Margaret Murphy)
Mrs. Thomas Curran, the former Miss Margaret Murphy, was born in County Wexford, Ireland on December 25, 1836. Her death occurred on April 12, 1903. She was the sister of Phillip J. Murphy.

His first wife was the daughter of Reverend J. Meek. His second wife was the daughter of Jacob Cox of Ohio. On October 18, 1860 he married his third wife.
Mr. Davidson was in the shoe and boot business. Later he operated the Ida May which was a ferry boat that traveled between Iowa and Illinois shore. The third wife of Andrew Davidson was Mrs. Rachel Wilson. Her maiden name was Rachel Chenoweth. She was born in Ross County, Ohio June 28, 1820 and her death occurred in Muscatine on April 22, 1908.

Davis, Isaiah
Isaiah Davis came to Muscatine in 1837. He was born in Virginia on February 10, 1816. On May 27, 1844 he married Miss Hannah Drury. Mrs. Davis was born in Indiana in 1823. In 1889, the couple went to Washington Territory. Both are deceased.
Mr. Davis helped survey the city of Muscatine. Also, he was possibly the first settler in Sweetland Township, Muscatine County. In 1846, General John E. Fletcher was appointed by President Polk as an Indian agent for the Winnebagoes and served in that capacity for 11 years. Suel Foster came to Muscatine in 1836. He was born in Hillsboro, New Hampshire August 26, 1811. On October 8, 1847 he was married. Mr. Foster’s death occurred January 21, 1886.
Mr. Foster was the first man in Iowa to advocate for the establishment of a State Agricultural College. Once the college was established he was elected as director of the institution, five of which he served as President of the board. In Muscatine he owned the Fountain Hill Nursery. Samuel Frantz came to Muscatine in 1850. In 1825 he was born in Pennsylvania and was married there on November 26, 1846. His death occurred on November 4, 1908.

General John G. Gordon, operated a general store under the name J.G. Gordon & Company in Muscatine. He received the title of “General” by commission from Governor Briggs of Iowa. Mr. Gordon was a carpenter who helped build the first frame building in Muscatine, Iowa which happened to be a tavern. He also built the first frame store building which was erected for Adam Ogilvie. His second wife was Mary Siebert who died in 1893. His third wife Lucy was born in Ohio in 1848. She came with her parents to Muscatine in 1855. Lucy died January 5, 1917.

Peter Jackson came to Muscatine in 1838. He was born in Keith, Scotland on April 30, 1816. He died in 1901. He died in 1901. He was married twice. His first wife died in 1856. He married his second wife in 1857 in Toronto, Canada.
According to his obituary, in 1841 Mr. Jackson and Mr. Ogilvie built the first open front store in Muscatine specializing in general merchandise. In 1856, he joined several other businessmen and organized the Merchants Exchange Bank which reorganized the following year as the First National Bank. He served as the first president of the bank and later was a cashier at the bank for 14 years. His obituary can be located in the January 31, 1901 page 5, Muscatine Journal. Also note that her maiden name is typed in the photograph caption as “Francis Ross Lee.” Her obituary states that her maiden name was “Francis Ross Lewis” and it has been changed in the information on this page to reflect that.

Leffingwell, William
William Leffingwell came to Muscatine in 1839. He was born in Norwich, Connecticut on January 4, 1799. He was married in New London, Connecticut. On October 23, 1876, his death occurred.
During the course of his residency in Muscatine, Mr. Leffingwell held many different offices at both the city and county level. Some of the different positions he held were Mayor, County Commissioner and County Clerk, and City Treasurer. The book History of Muscatine County, 1879 contains a list of when he served in these different capacities. His obituary appears in the October 27, 1876 Muscatine Journal on page 3. Jacob Leibbrand came to Muscatine in 1851. He was born near Stuttgart, Germany September 10, 1827. In 1855, he was married. Mr. Leibbrand died January 12, 1900.
Muscatine City Directories indicate that he was a tailor. The Muscatine Journal & News-Tribune Centennial Edition May 30, 1940 provides the following information on page 18, “Germany was the birthplace of both Jacob Leibbrand and his wife, the former Dorothea Steve, who came to this district in the middle of the 19th century. Mr. Leibbrand was born near Stuttgart, Sept. 10, 1827, coming here in 1851. Mrs. Leibbrand was born near Cassel. They were married in 1885. He lived until Jan. 12, 1900. Her death is recorded as of Sept. 22, 1897.” An obituary could not be located.

Leibrand, Mrs Jacob (Dorothea Stebe)
Mrs. Jacob Leibbrand, nee Dorothea Stebe, was born in Harle near Cassel, Germany. Her death occurred September 22, 1897.
The Muscatine Journal & News-Tribune Centennial Edition May 30, 1940 provides the following information on page 18, “Germany was the birthplace of both Jacob Leibbrand and his wife, the former Dorothea Steve, who came to this district in the middle of the 19th century. Mr. Leibbrand was born near Stuttgart, Sept. 10, 1827, coming here in 1851. Mrs. Leibbrand was born near Cassel. They were married in 1885. He lived until Jan. 12, 1900. Her death is recorded as of Sept. 22, 1897.” An obituary could not be located.
Also note that the caption gives her maiden name as “Stebe” and the newspaper “Steve.”

Lemp, John
John Lemp came to Muscatine in 1842 from St. Louis. He was born in Berne, Switzerland in 1820. His wife Sarah B. Lemp died in 1859. Mr. Lemp died in Chicago, Illinois on August 18th, 1905.
Mr. Lemp was a wholesale and retail dealer in Muscatine. His obituary appears in the Muscatine Journal dated August 21, 1905 on page 2. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine Iowa and his headstone can be viewed on the website Find a Grave.

Mrs. E. B. Lewis, nee Isabel (Isabelle) Jackson, was the first wife of E. B. Lewis. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on March 19, 1841. Came to Muscatine with her family in 1853. Isabel was the daughter of Jasper Jackson by his first wife. Mrs. Lewis died on November 25, 1894.

Lord Sr, Richard
Richard Lord Sr., came to Muscatine in 1837. He was born in East Haddam, Connecticut on January 10, 1808. He was married on January 29, 1840. Mr. Lord’s death occurred on December 1, 1885.
Mr. Lord was a farmer as well as being one of the largest bee keepers in the State. An article in the Muscatine Daily Journal dated November 21, 1885 page 3, tells of the accident that would lead to his death. Lowe, Ralph P
Ralph P. Lowe came to Muscatine in 1840. Moved to Lee County in 1850. He was Governor of Iowa from January 1858 - January 1860. Mr. Lowe was born in Warren County, Ohio November 27, 1805. He died in Washington, D.C. on December 22, 1883.

Lucas, Mrs Samuel (Nancy Hitchcock)
Mrs. Samuel Lucas, nee Nancy H. Hitchcock, was born in Scioto County, Ohio on September 26, 1813. She was the sister of John P. Hitchcock. She came to Muscatine in 1838.

Lucas, Samuel
Samuel Lucas came to Muscatine in 1838. He was born in Scioto County, Ohio on January 10, 1807. Mr. Lucas was married in Ohio October 17, 1833. He died on October 5, 1878. Mr. Lucas was a cousin of Governor Lucas.

John Mackey came to Muscatine in 1856. He was born in Fermoy County Cork, Ireland June 11, 1830. Mr. Mackey was married on July 12, 1858. He died March 15, 1881. He was a veteran of the Mexican War and the Civil War.

Mrs. John Mackey, nee Ellen Murphy, was born in County Tipperary, Ireland March 16,1842. She came to Muscatine in 1850. Mrs. Mackey died September 5, 1907.

Magoon, George D (Lieutenant)
Lieutenant George D. Magoon was a Civil War veteran. He came to Muscatine in 1839 from Warsaw, Illinois. Mr. Magoon was born on February 11, 1825 in Ware, Massachusetts. George married on September 27, 1860. He died March 22, 1900. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Magoon.
Under Mr. Magoon’s supervision the following buildings were erected: the German Catholic Church, the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Presbyterian Church, Second and Third Ward Schools, the Union and freight depots, the Hotel Webster and the Herwig Building. Magoon, Mrs George (Joanne Kincaid)
Mrs. George D. Magoon, nee Joanne Kincaid, was born on February 11, 1839 in Tippecanoe, Indiana. She was the daughter of G.W. and Lavisa Kincaid. Her death occurred on February 21, 1910.
Mrs. Magoon attended Iowa Wesleyan University of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. She was a charter member of the Old Ladies Home Association. Mrs. Magoon’s obituary can be found in the February 22, 1910 Muscatine Journal on page 12. Use the term “Mrs. George D. Kincaid” when locating her obituary.

Magoon, Mrs Isaac (Hannah Shaw)
Mrs. Isaac Magoon, nee Hannah Shaw, was born in Palmer, Massachusetts, May 5, 1790. She came to Muscatine in 1839 with her husband. He was born in Ware, Massachusetts, April 8, 1792. Mr. Magoon died December 27, 1846. Mrs. Magoon died October 12, 1871.

George G. Mahan came to Muscatine in 1854. He was born in Palmyra, Missouri March 11, 1825. He married in Palmyra, Missouri in 1848. In 1866, he moved to Memphis, Tennessee. On February 4, 1875 he died in Memphis.

Mahan, Mrs George G (Sarah Hoyt)
Mrs. George G. Mahan, nee Sarah P. Hoyt, was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts on November 3, 1831. She was the daughter of David Hoyt. Her death occurred in Memphis, Tennessee on February 18, 1878.

Mahin, John
John Mahin came to Muscatine in 1843, left for a brief time, and returned in 1847. He was born in Noblesville, Indiana on December 8, 1833. He was the editor of the Muscatine Journal newspaper from 1852-1902. His death occurred in 1919. His first wife was Ann Herr died March 12, 1862.
Mr. Mahin was involved in the newspaper business for over 50 years. He was the editor and publisher of the Muscatine Journal newspaper, served as postmaster, and was a crusader against liquor traffic. His obituary can be located in the July 24, 1919 Muscatine Journal on page 1. In the July 25, 1919 Muscatine Journal, on page 3, a tribute was published in his memory. Matthews, Hiram
Hiram Matthews came to Muscatine in 1839. He was born in Maryland, New York on August 22, 1796. On August 18, 1819, he married Elizabeth Knapp in New York state. Hiram died in Muscatine September 22, 1862.
A brief obituary can be found in The Muscatine Journal dated September 26, 1962 page 4. By trade, Hiram was a brick and stone mason. It’s recorded in Register of Old Settlers, Book One, page 91, that Hiram built the first brick home dwelling for his brother in 1839. The house was two stories and located at the corner of Water and Cedar Streets. In 1839, Hiram, his brothers, their wives and children organized the first Episcopal Church in Muscatine.

Matthews, Mrs Hiram (Elizabeth Knapp)
Mrs. Hiram Mattews, nee Elizabeth Knapp, was born in Cobleskill, New York, September 20, 1822. She came to Muscatine with her husband Hiram in 1839. She died January 28, 1880.
In The Muscatine Journal on January 30, 1880 page 4 she is remembered at the Old Settler’s Meeting. Hiram, Elizabeth, their children, and Hiram’s brothers and their families organized the First Episcopal Church in Muscatine in 1839.

Mauck, Issac
Issac Mauck came to Muscatine in 1837. He was born June 2, 1816 in Virginia. On February 1, 1843 he married Charlotte L. Bailey. Mr. Mauck died May 9, 1891.

R. H. McCampbell was a Civil War Vet. Came to Muscatine in 1862. Born in Shelby County, Kentucky on March 18, 1828. He married Miss Elvina Allen of Kentucky in June of 1853. They were married in Indiana. Elvina died December 26, 1909. R.H. died July 4, 1911.
According to R.H.’s obituary the “R.H.” stood for Robert Harvey. His obituary can be found in the Muscatine Journal July 4, 1911 pg. 4. McCloud, David G
D.C. (David G.) McCloud came to Muscatine in 1839. He was born in Franklin County, Ohio, August 11, 1818. On July 18, 1849 he married Phoebe Chatterley. Mr. McCloud died March 29, 1889.
He was a plasterer by trade, which avocation he followed until in 1853, when he was elected Sheriff of this county, which position he filled with credit to himself and the county for four years. At that time the county jail was nothing more than an old cabin. Upon retiring from office he engaged in farming in Lake township.
According to his obituary in the Muscatine Journal March 30, 1889 page 4, his middle initial is “G.” He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery Muscatine, Iowa. His tombstone can be viewed on Find a Grave.

McCloud, David G (Phoebe Chatterley)
Phoebe Chatterley was born in England on December 16, 1822. She married David G. McCloud. Mrs. McCloud died on February 13, 1894.

For around 40 years Mr. McQuesten was in the hardware business. The initials “W.W.” stand for William Wirt. He handled the first carload of hard coal that arrived in the community. Mrs. George Morgridge, nee Ruth Amanda Casebeer, was born in Cedar County, Iowa January 25, 1845. She married George O. Morgridge near Wilton, Iowa November 14, 1866.

Henry Morrison came to Muscatine in 1855 from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was born in Rosse, Ireland on February 28, 1803. On November 28, 1827 he was married in Wheeling, West Virginia. Mr. Morrison died December 3, 1878.

Mrs. Philip J. Murphy, nee Catherine (Katherine) Kelly, was born in Ireland in June 1849. Married Philip J. Murphy in Muscatine on January 28,1868.

Joseph Mulford came to Muscatine in 1855. He was born in Bridgton, New Jersey on July 7, 1827. On May 2, 1854 he was married in Waybridge, Vermont. His death occurred on February 8, 1886.
Mr. Mulford was involved in the lumber industry in Muscatine. The planing mill Cadle & Mulford was reorganized into Huttig Brothers Manufacturing where he was the Superintendent. Mrs. P.M. Musser (nee Julia E. Hutchinson) was from Iowa City, Iowa. She was the daughter of Robert and Julia M. Hutchinson. Her death occurred in May of 1917.
Mrs. P.M. Musser was an active member in the Old Ladies Home serving as the president from the date of the organization to the time of her death. Benjamin Neidig came in 1849. On February 22, 1803, he was born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Catherine Snavely, his first wife, is deceased. He died on March 1, 1889.
Mr. Neidig had a business called Neidig & Son which was a butcher and ice business. His obituary appears in the Muscatine Journal on March 8, 1889 page 7. He is mentioned in two books: History of Muscatine County, Iowa 1879 page 613 and History of Muscatine County, Iowa Volume II 1911, page 1152. His name appears in the Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa records but there isn’t a burial date shown in the records.

O'Connor, Henry (Major)
Major Henry O’Connor came to Muscatine in 1842. He was born in Dublin, Ireland on July 26, 1820. On March 27, 1843 he was married in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. He died in Marshalltown, Iowa November 6, 1900. He was a Civil War veteran.
Mr. O’Connor was prominent in state politics and at one time was the Attorney General of Iowa. His obituary can be found in the Muscatine News-Tribune dated November 10, 1900 page 1. On November 13, 1900 page 5, the Muscatine Journal published an announcement that was picked up from the Sioux City Tribune regarding Mr. O’Connor’s death. Oaks, Jesse
Jesse Oaks came to Muscatine in 1843. He was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania on August 26, 1838. He married Lydia N. Bowlby on November 12, 1866. His death occurred on January 22, 1927. He was a Civil War veteran.

Mrs. Jesse Oaks, nee Lydia N. Bowlby was born on December 17, 1847 in Dayton, Ohio. She married on November 12, 1866. Her death occurred on January 1, 1925.

Ogilvie, Adam
Adam Ogilvie came to Muscatine in 1836. He was born at the manse of Glengerrick Keith, Scotland January 1804. His marriage occurred in New York City, New York, August 9, 1837. Mr. Ogilvie died February 5, 1865.
Mr. Ogilive opened the second mercantile store in Muscatine, the first being a trading post. An announcement of his death was made in the February 6, 1865 Muscatine Evening Journal on page 3. Ogilvie, Mrs Adam (Isabella Milne)
Mrs. Adam Ogilvie, nee Isabella Milne, was born in Keith, Scotland in 1808. She came to Muscatine in 1837. Her death occurred on December 27, 1901.

Olds, Gamaliel
Gamaliel Olds came to Muscatine County in 1839. He was born November 28, 1803 in Windham, Vermont and is now deceased. In 1826 he married Minerva Howe. Minerva died in 1876. Mr. Olds married a second time in 1881. His bride was Harriet Metcalf; she is also deceased.
Mr. Olds was a farmer in Pike Township. He was one of the first Justices of the Peace and also held the position of County Drainage Commissioner. His obituary appears in the January 27, 1894 Muscatine Journal on page 4. He is buried in the Lone Tree Cemetery, Lone Tree, Johnson County, Iowa and his headstone appears on the website Find a Grave. Pace, Michael Perkins
Michael Perkins Pace came to Muscatine in 1835. He was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia February 25, 1815. On April 2, 1843 he married. His death occurred on April 8, 1892.

Page, Charles
Charles Page came to Muscatine in 1850. He was born in Lincolnshire, England on July 28, 1830. On January 31, 1855, he was married in Wiggin-Hall, Norfolk County, England. His death occurred in Dallas, Texas on March 31, 1904.
Mr. Page was a business man being one of the original incorporators of the First National Savings Bank and the Muscatine Savings Bank. Parvin, Theodore S
Theodore S. Parvin came to Muscatine in 1838. On January 15, 1817 he was born in Cedarville, New Jersey. He was married on May 17, 1843. He was a resident of Muscatine County, Iowa from 1838-1865. He died in Cedar Rapids, Iowa June 28, 1901.
Mr. Parvin served as private secretary for Robert Lucas, the first territorial governor of Iowa. One of the first tasks entrusted to Mr. Parvin by Governor Lucas was establishing a territorial library. In addition, Mr. Parvin was the first lawyer admitted to practice law in the territorial courts of what is now the state of Iowa. An obituary appeared in the Muscatine Journal on June 29, 1901 page 2 and lists many of his other accomplishments. Cemetery records indicate that he is buried in Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City, Iowa.

Phelps, Fred S
Fred S. Phelps came to Muscatine in 1842. On December 17, 1809 he was born in Simbury, Connecticut. On June 4, 1835 he married in Natchez, Mississippi. His death occurred April 27, 1900.

Richards, William C
William C. Richards came to Muscatine in 1847. He was born in Saxony on October 30, 1840. and died February 16, 1911. In 1867, he married Mary Becke the daughter of Theo Becke, Sr.
Mr. Richards date of death listed in the caption is wrong. It should be March 16, 1911. His obituary appeared in the March 17, 1911 Muscatine News-Tribune on page 8. He was connected with the Hershey Lumber Company. Also, he was a Civil War veteran. His wife Mary’s obituary appeared in the Muscatine Journal on August 29, 1917 page 6. Richman, J Scott (Judge)
Judge J. Scott Richman came to Muscatine in 1839. He was born in Somerset, Ohio on March 11, 1820. His death occurred May 17, 1908. In 1842 he married Calista A. Hannaman in Knoxville, Illinois. Mrs. Richman was born in Noblesville, Indiana. Her death occurred February 10, 1878.
Judge Richman practiced law for 69 years, all but eight years of which he was located in Muscatine. The May 18, 1908 page 1 Muscatine Journal had an obituary for Judge Richman. His friend, Judge Carskaddan, wrote a memorial for him which was published on the same day but on page 5. Additional information may be found in the book History of Muscatine County Iowa, 1911 pages 373-374. His wife’s obituary appeared in the Muscatine Journal on February 15, 1878 page 3. Cemetery records indicate that Judge and Mrs. Richman are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Ruckdeschel, Lorenz and Eva
Lorenz Ruckdeschel and his wife Eva came to Muscatine in 1854. Both were born in Bavaria. In 1864, they married. He died June 1882 and her death was December 4, 1891.
There is a death announcement for Mr. Ruckdeschel in the June 16, 1882 Muscatine Journal page 3. Cemetery records indicate that he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.
Eva was married before. Her first husband was John Ruckdeschel, a brother of Lorenz. An obituary appears for Eva Ruckdeschel in the December 25, 1891 Muscatine News-Tribune page 4. Mr. Shammo started out as a harness maker but his career changed and he became involved in the grocery business.

In 1856, with Green & Stone and Jacob Butler, Mr. Smalley laid out South Muscatine and subsequently Musserville. Also, they would also add a second edition to South Muscatine. Mr. Smalley owned a considerable amount of land. He laid out two additions to the City of Muscatine, Smalley’s first and second additions. He also owned 30 buildings in Muscatine which he rented.
