Arnold, Captain Leonard
Captain Leonard Arnold came to Port Louisa in 1846 and moved to Muscatine in 1858. On June 5, 1822 he was born in Schnornbach, Germany. In 1845 he married. His death occurred December 28, 1898.
Captain Arnold was the captain of the first ferry boat operating at this point. The boat was called the “Muscatine” and carried passengers across the river back and forth from Illinois. This information was located in his son George’s obituary. Captain Arnold was also in the wood, coal and sand business. An obituary can be found for him in the December 28, 1898 Muscatine Journal on page 1 and in the Muscatine News-Tribune dated December 29, 1898 page 1. Arnold, George
George Arnold is the son of Captain Leonard Arnold. He came to Muscatine in 1858. His birth took place in Quincy, Illinois, April 19, 1846. On September 28, 1883 he married Miss Helen Lysen in Muscatine. He died February 22, 1905.
Like his father, George Arnold worked on steamboats and became captain of the steamboat Holston in 1870. He served on the Muscatine City Council for 6 years. Was a member of the Muscatine Sand Company. His obituary appeared in the Muscatine Journal February 24, 1905 page 12. His wife Helen was the organist at St. Mathias Church for 30 years. Mrs. Arnold, maiden name Anna Margaret Merkel, is the wife of Captain Leonard Arnold. On March 28, 1821 she was born in Germany. Came to Muscatine in 1858. Her death occurred on July 25, 1882.

Austin, Dr Philip A
Dr. Philip A. Austin came to Muscatine in 1861. He was born in Marden, County Kent, England January 28, 1834. On March 25, 1857 he was married in Sparta, Kentucky. His death occurred February 15, 1911.

Mrs. Philip A. Austin’s maiden name was Susan Green. She was born in Kentucky. She came to Muscatine with her husband Dr. Philip A. Austin in 1861. After her husband’s death she moved to California.
A death announcement for Mrs. Austin can be located in the Muscatine Journal February 3, 1938 page 3. In the March 25, 1908 Muscatine Journal page 2 an article was published regarding Mr. and Mrs. Philip A. Austin’s 51st wedding anniversary.

Baird, Mr. and Mrs R B (Elizabeth B. Hill)
R. B. Baird and wife Elizabeth, maiden last name Hill, married in 1862. He came to Muscatine in 1859. Mr. Baird was born in Jeffersonville, Indian December 1837. He died August 18, 1910. Mrs. Baird was born in Newport, Rhode Island June 1842. She died in Chicago, Illinois October 22, 1925. Mr. Baird was a Civil War veteran.
The initial “R” stands for Robert. He was the commander of the Shelby Norman Post in Muscatine. He traveled for the Chambers Lumber Company and later Huttig Manufacturing Company. His obituary can be found in the August 23, 1910 page 8 Muscatine Journal. There was a death announcement that appeared for Mrs. Baird in the October 23, 1925 page 10 Muscatine Journal. According to cemetery records both are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Baker, Harvey
Harvey Baker came to Muscatine County in 1845. He was born in Stonelick, Ohio February 20, 1822. On April 11, 1843 he married Harriet Freeman in New Palestine, Indiana. Mr. Baker died January 19, 1895. Mrs. Baker was born on August 9, 1823 and died April 5, 1894.
Mr. Baker was a farmer in Fulton Township where he served on the County Board of Supervisors. His obituary can be located in the January 20, 1895 Muscatine News-Tribune page 1. Banks, General Lyman
Colonel Lyman Banks came to Muscatine in 1842 with his parents. He married in Muscatine on July 4, 1868. His death occurred near Seattle, Washington in 1915 at the age of 72.
In all the newspaper articles Lyman was referred to as “General” not “Colonel.” He served 4 years in the Civil War and was one time Brigadier General of the Iowa National Guard. General Banks was foreman of the Muscatine Relief Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 and served as Muscatine County Treasurer from 1879-1882. Banks, Mrs Lyman (Emmeline Hershe)
Mrs. Banks, maiden name Emmeline Hershe, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania July 4, 1844. She died in Seattle, Washington in 1903. She was the daughter of Jacob Hershe.
Most sources spell Emmeline’s maiden name “Hershey” not “Hershe.” While in Seattle, Washington Emmeline managed a day nursery, an institution founded for the care of children while their mothers were at work. Also, she was active with the Y.W.C.A. Her obituary appeared in the June 28, 1903 Muscatine News-Tribune page 1. Barnard, John
John Barnard came to Muscatine in 1852. He was born in Wheeling, West Virginia June 6, 1822. In October 1847, he was married in Zanesville, Ohio. He died March 31, 1901.

This is a photograph of Mr. and Mrs. John Barry. John came to Muscatine in 1847. He was born near Dayton, Ohio November 18, 1840 and died March 9, 1922. He was a Civil War veteran. Their marriage occurred May 3, 1871. Mrs. Barry was the former Miss Mary Frances Nisly. She was born June 29, 1851 and died April 19, 1923. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Nisly.

Bartlett, Martin
Martin Bartlett came to Muscatine in 1849. He was born in Virginia in 1832. On January 27, 1875 he was married. His death occurred May 8, 1897. He is shown holding his son Howard in this photograph.
Started out as a farmer but turned his attention to the pork packing industry. His obituary appeared in the May 9, 1897 page 1, Muscatine News-Tribune. Not mentioned in Mr. Bartlett’s caption is that he married Miss Rebecca Orr Hoopes in 1867. Rebecca was the daughter of Lindley and Mary Addleman Hoopes. Her death occurred in February 1870. No children were born to this marriage. She is buried in High Prairie Cemetery, Muscatine, Muscatine County, Iowa. The marriage referred to in the caption is to Sultana Fulliam his second wife.

Bartlett, Mrs Martin (Sultana Fulliam)
Mrs. Martin Bartlett, nee Sultana Fulliam was born in Muscatine. She was the daughter of Dr. G.W. Fulliam and his first wife Eliza Morford Fulliam.

Mrs. Benjamin Beach, Josephine Mary Meason was born May 4, 1841 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. On January 31, 1866 she married Benjamin Beach. She was his second wife. Her death occurred April 13, 1919.

John Beard came to Muscatine in 1855. On April 11, 1810 he was born in Pennsylvania. He was married in Chester County, Pennsylvania on January 23, 1834. His death occurred on November 17, 1896.
Mr. Beard served as County Coroner for several terms and for a number of years as County inspector of Weights and Measures. His obituary appeared in the November 17, 1896 Muscatine Journal page 4. Bennett, Joseph
Joseph Bennett came to Muscatine in 1839 from St. Louis, Missouri. On December 5, 1817 he was born in Lunenburg, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He married in 1845. His death occurred April 15, 1906.
In 1850, he started the first flour mill in the city of Muscatine. Also, was responsible for building the first steamboat ever constructed in the city using it as a freight packet. On May 24, 1857, he organized the Green Street Mission and served as the Sunday School Superintendent for over 20 years. His obituary appeared in the April 17, 1906 page 5 Muscatine Journal. Cemetery records indicate he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Berkshire, Montgomery M
Montgomery M. Berkshire came to Muscatine in 1837. He was born in Ohio in 1813 and died in Muscatine, Iowa May 2, 1884. He married Miss Zerilda Palmer, who was the daughter of Captain James Palmer, in Muscatine. She died December 1863.
When searching for Mr. Berkshire’s obituary use the search term “M. M. Berkshire.” His obituary can be found in the Muscatine Daily Journal dated May 3, 1884 page 2. There was a correction to Mr. Berkshire’s obituary in the May 9, 1884 page 7 Muscatine Journal. Apparently it was reported that he was a Democrat when in fact he was a “radical Republican.” The December 7, 1863 Muscatine Journal carried a brief announcement of Mrs. Bilkey’s death. However, her name appeared to be spelled differently but all other information indicated that this was Zerilda. Cemetery records indicate that both husband and wife are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Bilkey Sr, Mr and Mrs Joseph (Joanna Weber)
Joseph Bilkey Sr, came to Muscatine in 1855. He was born in Budapest, Hungry in 1827 and his death occurred on March 3, 1893 in Muscatine, Iowa. His wife, the former Miss Joanna Weber, is shown seated next to him in the photograph. They were married in Newark, New Jersey. Mrs. Bilkey was born in Wurtemburg, Germany in 1834 and died in Muscatine, Iowa February 12, 1909.
Mr. Bilkey’s occupation was a harness maker. There is an article in the January 1, 1893 page 3 Muscatine Semi-Weekly News Tribune that mentions the “Bilkey Block” of which Mr. Joseph Bilkey and Son invested in real estate in the business and residential parts of the city of Muscatine. An obituary appeared in the March 4, 1893, page 1 Muscatine News-Tribune for Mr. Bilkey. Mrs. Bilkey’s obituary can be located in the February 12, 1909 Muscatine Journal page 2. Both are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa and their headstone appears on the website Find a Grave. One more item of note is that in all the newspaper articles Mrs. Bilkey’s first name is referred to as Johanna but her headstone and this caption reads “Joanna.”

Bishop, Jacob A
Jacob A. Bishop came to Muscatine in 1859. On February 27, 1825 he was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He married his first wife on September 1, 1849. His second wife was named Miss Margaret Kincaid. Mr. Bishop died on March 22, 1905. Mrs. Margaret Bishop, his second wife, died April 20, 1922.
Jacob Bishop was a grocer. He was also one of the incorporators of the Muscatine Water Works Company and served for many years as one of its directors. An obituary can be located for him in the March 22, 1905 Muscatine Journal on page 5. His second wife Margaret’s obituary is located in the Muscatine Journal April 22, 1922 page 10. She served for a number of years on the board of directors for the Old Ladies Home in Muscatine, Iowa. Mrs. J.A. Bishop, the former Miss Rebecca Kitzmiller, was the first wife of Jacob A. Bishop. She came to Muscatine in 1859. She was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, March 7, 1828 and her death occurred March 16, 1879.

Bitzer, Galbraith
Galbraith Bitzer came to Muscatine in 1853. He was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania August 28, 1836. On July 5, 1862 he married. His death occurred on May 24, 1914. He was a veteran of the Civil War.
Mr. Bitzer was a carpenter by trade but after the Civil War he worked as a butcher and then around 1879 he opened a grocery store. Furthermore, he helped organize the Rescue Fire company serving as foreman from 1876-1887. An obituary appeared for Mr. Bitzer in the May 25, 1914 page 8 Muscatine Journal. Henry Bitzer came to Muscatine in 1853. Born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania on October 19, 1844. In 1877, he married in Muscatine. His death occurred November 27, 1909. His mother was Mrs. Barbara Bitzer.
According to his obituary Henry tried his hand at several different occupations but was perhaps best know for his association with the marble business. Martin Bitzer came to Muscatine in 1853. He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on February 16, 1827, On April 1, 1879 he was married in Lisbon, Iowa. His bride was Elizabeth Neidig of Linn County. Mr. Bitzer died March 4, 1903.

Mrs. Barbara Bitzer’s maiden name was Houck. She was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1812. In 1825 she married Henry Bitzer, Sr., in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. When she arrived in Muscatine in 1853, she was a widow with five sones. Her death occurred January 30, 1878.

Mrs. Ann Boland was born in Ireland. Her death occurred February 8, 1890. Her husband was Patrick Boland.

Conrad Brandt came to Muscatine in 1848. He was born in Hamburg, Germany February 23, 1821. On December 2, 1848 he was married in Muscatine. His death occurred August 8, 1906.
Mr. Brandt was a cabinet maker by trade but after about six years turned his eye to farming in Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa. Judge William F. Brannan came to Muscatine in 1855. On September 24, 1824 he was born in Washington, D.C. Sarah Hershey was his first wife and she is deceased. He married his second wife December 10, 1879. His death occurred December 31, 1902.

For instance, she is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa according to the cemetery records. However, her first name is spelled “Julinette.” Her obituary in the newspaper spells it “Juliette” and the caption to her photograph spells her first name “Julisette.” Let’s not forget the possibility of “Juliet” as well. Some of these are most likely typos but consider them when doing any genealogy searches.

Leibrand, Mr Jacob
Jacob Leibbrand came to Muscatine in 1851. He was born near Stuttgart, Germany September 10, 1827. In 1855, he was married. Mr. Leibbrand died January 12, 1900.
Muscatine City Directories indicate that he was a tailor. The Muscatine Journal & News-Tribune Centennial Edition May 30, 1940 provides the following information on page 18, “Germany was the birthplace of both Jacob Leibbrand and his wife, the former Dorothea Steve, who came to this district in the middle of the 19th century. Mr. Leibbrand was born near Stuttgart, Sept. 10, 1827, coming here in 1851. Mrs. Leibbrand was born near Cassel. They were married in 1885. He lived until Jan. 12, 1900. Her death is recorded as of Sept. 22, 1897.” An obituary could not be located.

Leibrand, Mrs Jacob (Dorothea Stebe)
Mrs. Jacob Leibbrand, nee Dorothea Stebe, was born in Harle near Cassel, Germany. Her death occurred September 22, 1897.
The Muscatine Journal & News-Tribune Centennial Edition May 30, 1940 provides the following information on page 18, “Germany was the birthplace of both Jacob Leibbrand and his wife, the former Dorothea Steve, who came to this district in the middle of the 19th century. Mr. Leibbrand was born near Stuttgart, Sept. 10, 1827, coming here in 1851. Mrs. Leibbrand was born near Cassel. They were married in 1885. He lived until Jan. 12, 1900. Her death is recorded as of Sept. 22, 1897.” An obituary could not be located.
Also note that the caption gives her maiden name as “Stebe” and the newspaper “Steve.”

John Lemp came to Muscatine in 1842 from St. Louis. He was born in Berne, Switzerland in 1820. His wife Sarah B. Lemp died in 1859. Mr. Lemp died in Chicago, Illinois on August 18th, 1905.

Lewis, Ewing B
Ewing B. Lewis arrived in Muscatine in 1851. He was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania on January 30, 1831. Married his first wife in September of 1860. Mr. Lewis died on August 18, 1914. He was a veteran of the Civil War.

John B. Lindle came to Muscatine in 1851. He was born in Neuenburg, Germany August 20, 1838. Mr. Lindle married Sophia Ruckdeschel. She was born in 1842 and died in 1918. He died March 17, 1903.
According to Mr. Lindle’s obituary, he lived in Lake Township near the Cedar River. He was a farmer with property in the county and city. On March 18, 1903, page 5, his obituary appeared in the Muscatine Journal. Mr. Lindle is buried in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa and his headstone can be viewed on the website Find a Grave.

Little, J G H
J.G.H. Little came to Muscatine in 1850. He was born in Orange County, New York on January 13, 1835. His father was Gabriel Little. Mr. Little married on January 18, 1855. He died June 8, 1893.

Lord Sr, Richard
Richard Lord Sr., came to Muscatine in 1837. He was born in East Haddam, Connecticut on January 10, 1808. He was married on January 29, 1840. Mr. Lord’s death occurred on December 1, 1885.
Mr. Lord was a farmer as well as being one of the largest bee keepers in the State. An article in the Muscatine Daily Journal dated November 21, 1885 page 3, tells of the accident that would lead to his death. Lowe, Ralph P
Ralph P. Lowe came to Muscatine in 1840. Moved to Lee County in 1850. He was Governor of Iowa from January 1858 - January 1860. Mr. Lowe was born in Warren County, Ohio November 27, 1805. He died in Washington, D.C. on December 22, 1883.

Lucas, Mrs Samuel (Nancy Hitchcock)
Mrs. Samuel Lucas, nee Nancy H. Hitchcock, was born in Scioto County, Ohio on September 26, 1813. She was the sister of John P. Hitchcock. She came to Muscatine in 1838. She is deceased.

Samuel Lucas came to Muscatine in 1838. He was born in Scioto County, Ohio on January 10, 1807. Mr. Lucas was married in Ohio October 17, 1833. He died on October 5, 1878. Mr. Lucas was a cousin of Governor Lucas.

Benjamin Neidig came in 1849. On February 22, 1803, he was born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Catherine Snavely, his first wife, is deceased. He died on March 1, 1889.
Mr. Neidig had a business called Neidig & Son which was a butcher and ice business. His obituary appears in the Muscatine Journal on March 8, 1889 page 7. He is mentioned in two books: History of Muscatine County, Iowa 1879 page 613 and History of Muscatine County, Iowa Volume II 1911, page 1152. His name appears in the Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa records but there isn’t a burial date shown in the records.

O'Connor, Henry (Major)
Major Henry O’Connor came to Muscatine in 1842. He was born in Dublin, Ireland on July 26, 1820. On March 27, 1843 he was married in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. He died in Marshalltown, Iowa November 6, 1900. He was a Civil War veteran.
Mr. O’Connor was prominent in state politics and at one time was the Attorney General of Iowa. His obituary can be found in the Muscatine News-Tribune dated November 10, 1900 page 1. On November 13, 1900 page 5, the Muscatine Journal published an announcement that was picked up from the Sioux City Tribune regarding Mr. O’Connor’s death. Oaks, Jesse
Jesse Oaks came to Muscatine in 1843. He was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania on August 26, 1838. He married Lydia N. Bowlby on November 12, 1866. His death occurred on January 22, 1927. He was a Civil War veteran.

Mr. Ogilive opened the second mercantile store in Muscatine, the first being a trading post. An announcement of his death was made in the February 6, 1865 Muscatine Evening Journal on page 3. Shepherd Smalley came to Muscatine in 1839. He was born in Hamilton, Ohio August 12, 1817. On February 12, 1845 he was married. His death occurred December 26, 1897.
Mr. Smalley owned a considerable amount of land. He laid out two additions to the City of Muscatine, Smalley’s first and second additions. He also owned 30 buildings in Muscatine which he rented.

Mrs. Shepherd Smalley, nee Minerva Drury was born in Wayne County, Indiana April 13, 1813. Her death occurred June 25, 1888. She was the daughter of Isaiah and Priscilla Drury.

Sparks, Green
Green Sparks came to Muscatine in 1856. He was born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana September 18, 1808. Mr. Sparks married in Lawrenceburg on May 26, 1835. His death occurred August 11, 1881.
Mr. Sparks was in the dry goods and later the furniture business. He was also a member of the City Council. An obituary can be located in the August 12, 1881 Muscatine Journal on page 3. Cemetery records indicate that he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Mrs. P. B. Speer, formerly Mrs. Elizabeth Moffitt Cooley was born in Rochester, New York April 9, 1828. Her death occurred January 11, 1893. She was the widow of Henry Cooley.

Stein, Philip
Philip Stein came to Muscatine in 1850. He was born in West Hanover, Pennsylvania June 6, 1829. Mr. Stein’s death occurred May 22, 1908. He was married twice. His first wife was Christina E. Secrist, she died in 1863. He married Elizabeth Neidig in 1865. Elizabeth was born in Pennsylvania in 1831 and her death occurred December 2, 1920.
Mr. Stein formed a partnership with his cousin and created the S.G. & P Stein Furniture Store. An obituary can be found for him in the Muscatine Journal dated May 23, 1908 on page 7. Please note that his first name could be spelled “Phillip” with two lls.

Stockdale, John
John Stockdale came to Muscatine in 1859. He was born in Yorkshire, England June 1828. He married Priscilla Goodman in Oswego, New York. Priscilla is deceased. Married his second wife in Muscatine. His death occurred July 23, 1899.
Mr. Stockdale was a blacksmith by trade. An obituary can be found for him in the Muscatine Journal dated July 24, 1899 on page 1. Information regarding his life also appeared in the book History of Muscatine County, Iowa Biographical Section, 1879 page 621.Cemetery records indicate that he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Stone, Charles
Charles Stone came to Muscatine in 1851. He was born in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts February 10, 1825. On March 25, 1856 he married. His death occurred December 30, 1890.
Mr. Stone was in the hardware business with his brother William for 12 years after which time he moved to a fruit farm where he raised berries and small fruits.
The Muscatine News-Tribune published Mr. Stone’s obituary January 3, 1890 on page 4. Cemetery records indicate that he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.
Please note that the caption incorrectly gave his death as December 21, 1889. It has been changed in the caption so that the correct date is provided.

Stone, George C
George C. Stone came to Muscatine in 1845. He was born in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts November 11, 1822. On September 3, 1849 he married. He died in Duluth, Minnesota October 25, 1900.
In 1851, Joseph A. Green and George C. Stone started the first bank in Muscatine called Green & Stone. The bank never recovered from the financial panic of 1857 and closed its doors in 1861.
An announcement regarding the death of Mr. Stone was reported in the October 26, 1900 Muscatine News-Tribune on page 1. Additional information was reported the following day.

Stone, Mrs Charles (Mary Humphreys)
Mrs. Charles Stone, formerly Mary Humphreys, was born in Canton, Connecticut January 26, 1834. Her parents were Decius and Laura Humphreys. Her death occurred July 21, 1918.
An obituary for Mrs. Charles Stone appears in the Muscatine Journal July 22, 1918 on page 4. Cemetery records indicate that Mrs. Stone is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.
An interesting note regarding Mrs. Stone was that she received her education at Mrs. Stronge’s seminary at Hartford, Connecticut. This was one of the first colleges for women.

Stone, Mrs George C (Catherine Baldwin)
Mrs. George C. Stone, nee Catherine Baldwin, was born in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts February 20, 1825. She died in St. Paul, Minnesota on October 9, 1892.

Stone, Mrs William R (Ella Gordon)
Mrs. William R. Stone’s maiden name was Ella Gordon. On June 28, 1837 she was born in Louisville, Kentucky. Her death occurred in Santa Barbara, California on November 11, 1920.
Mrs. Stone was one of the founders of St. Luke’s Hospital at Duluth, Minnesota. Also, she was the author of two books, O So Ge To, or The Hopi Maiden and The Cycle of Gleanings. Another interesting fact about her was that at the time of her death she held the unique record for being the oldest lady in America to have enjoyed an airplane flight that reached an altitude of several thousand feet. Stone, William R
William R. Stone came to Muscatine in 1847. He was born in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts on August 12, 1827. On April 21, 1857 he married. His death occurred August 26, 1915.
Mr. Stone’s obituary can be located in the Muscatine Journal dated August 27, 1915 on page 8. When he moved to Duluth, Minnesota he organized the Stone Ordean and Company wholesale grocery. He would later retire to Santa Barbara, California. The website Find a Grave contains a photograph of his headstone located in the Santa Barbara Cemetery, Santa Barbara, California. His family was prominent in Muscatine and there is information about the Stone family in the August 31, 1915 Muscatine Journal page 10.

Swan, Nathan Fitch
Nathan Fitch Swan came in 1851 to Muscatine from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was born in Saratoga, New York in 1810. He was married in New York state. His death occurred in October of 1875.
An obituary for Mr. Swan can be located in the Muscatine Journal October 12, 1875 page 4. Cemetery records indicate that he was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa. For more information about Mr. Swan see the book History of Muscatine County, Iowa Vol. II, 1911, Biographical, page 89. The heading will be for “Fitch William Swan,” who was his son, but there is information regarding Nathan as well.

Tappe, Frederick
Frederick Tappe came to Muscatine in 1854. He was born in Liebenburg, Germany, February 22, 1833. In 1860, he was married in Muscatine. Mr. Tappe’s death occurred on August 24, 1878.
During the Civil War, Mr. Tappe was a sulter for the 11th Iowa Regiment. He was in the millinery business and would eventually erect a brick business block on the corner of Second and Chestnut Streets. Also, Mr. Tappe was one of the original members of the first German Society in Muscatine called “Turverein.” An obituary can be found in the Muscatine Daily Journal dated August 26, 1878 page 4. Tappe, Mrs Frederick (Anna Tebow)
Mrs. Frederick Tappe, the former Anna Tebow was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Tebow who came to Muscatine in 1838. Mrs. Tappe.

Tarr, Lieutenant Samuel
Lieutenant Samuel Tarr came to Muscatine in 1839. He was born in Pennsylvania, March 22,1796. He was married in New Albany, Indiana. His death occurred July 13, 1867. Lt. Tarr was a member of the 37th Iowa Graybeard Regiment during the Civil War.

Thompson, Mrs Olney (Lydia Meader)
Mrs. Olney Thompson, nee Lydia Meader was born in Falmouth, Maine October 6, 1804. She came to Muscatine in 1854. She died in 1887.

Thompson, Mrs Samuel M (Ella B Woodward)
Mrs. Samuel M. Thompson, nee Ella B. Woodward was the last wife of Samuel M. Thompson. She was born and married in Muscatine. Ella Woodward Thompson was the daughter of Judge and Mrs. William G. Woodward.

Mr. Samuel M. Thompson came to Muscatine in 1850. He was born in Hoboken, New Jersey December 26, 1822. His death occurred July 22, 1891. He was a Civil War veteran. His first wife Harriet, died in 1882. He would later marry Ella B. Woodward.

Mr. Franklin Thurston came to Muscatine in 1844. He was born in Hopkinton, Rhode Island March 4, 1814. On October 6, 1845 he was married in Muscatine. His death occurred May 26, 1878.

Thurston, Mrs Franklin (Margaret Reece)
Mrs. Franklin Thurston, nee Margaret Reece, was born in Pennsylvania on July 5, 1822. Her death occurred July 30, 1890. She was the daughter of Henry and Susanna Reece.
Mrs. Thurston came to Muscatine at the age of 15 and was at that time the only young lady in the town. Subsequently, she was recognized as the town belle. Timberlake, Harmon
Harmon Timberlake came to Muscatine in 1841. He was born in Highland County, Ohio in 1834. Mr. Timberlake married in Muscatine. He died on October 23, 1907.
Mr. Timberlake’s obituary appears in the Muscatine Journal October 25, 1907 on page 8. His interment was made in Timberlake Cemetery, Goshen Township. Mr. Timberlake resided on a farm in Pike Township. In December 1869, he married his second wife Miss Jennie Lyons.

Mrs. Harmon Timberlake, nee Hannah Wales was born in Yorkshire, England. She died on October 23, 1907.
Mrs. Timberlake accidently drowned when crossing the Cedar River on a ferry during a storm. Mrs. Timberlake’s obituary appears in the Muscatine Journal December 6, 1861 on page 4. She is buried in Timberlake Cemetery, Goshen Township.

Underwood, John
Mr. John Underwood, came to Muscatine in 1854. He was born in Pittsfield, New Hampshire June 15, 1814. Married Susan Livingston in Vermont. She was born in Vermont and died in Vermont before Mr. Underwood came to Muscatine. Mr. Underwood died November 5, 1896.

Vail, Jonathan
Jonathan M. Vail came to Muscatine in 1855. He was born in Goshen, Orange County, New York November 27, 1819. In January 1844, he married. His death occurred June 7, 1887.
Mr. Vail was a farmer on Muscatine Island. An obituary can be found for him in the Muscatine Journal dated June 17, 1887 page 6. Vail, Mrs Johnathan M (Louisa Chapman)
Mrs. Jonathan M. Vail, maiden name Louisa Chapman, was born in Florida, Orange County, New York in 1817. Her death occurred March 23, 1890.
Upon her husband’s death Mrs. Vail became postmistress. She held this title for two years. She was among the organizing members of the Island Presbyterian Church which dissolved in 1867. Her obituary appeared in the March 24, 1890 Muscatine Journal page 4. She is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa and her headstone can be viewed on the website Find a Grave.

Van Horne, George W
George W. Van Horne came to Muscatine in 1855. He was born in Chicopee, Massachusetts October 12, 1833. On Septermber 15, 1858 he married Miss Mary Morrow. George died February 8, 1895. He was a former United States Counsel to Marseilles, France. Mrs. Van Horne was the daughter of Dr. D. J. Morrow and she died in 1904.
During the first week of President Lincoln’s administration Mr. Van Horne was appointed United States Counsel to Marseilles, France. He held this post until 1866. Upon his return to Muscatine he engaged in the newspaper business starting the Muscatine Tribune in 1870. His obituary can be located in the Muscatine News-Tribune February 17, 1895 on page 6. Vanatta, William and Matilda (Matilda Brobeck)
William and Matilda Vanatta, nee Matilda Brobeck, were married on March 19, 1835. They came to Muscatine in 1846. He was born Beaver County, Pennsylvania November 17, 1811 and died December 19, 1891. Mrs. Vanatta was born in Virginia March of 1815 and died October 4, 1905.

Wallace, Robert T
Mr. Robert T. Wallace came to Muscatine in 1856. He was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania October 29, 1826. In 1861 he married Miss Mary A. Kerr, Claysville, Pennsylvania. He died June 1, 1898. Mrs. Wallace died on November 4, 1868.
In 1881, he began dealing in the wood, coal and building material trade. He also served as Mayor of Muscatine in 1882, 1883, 1884, and 1892. An obituary for Mr. Wallace can be found in the Muscatine News-Tribune dated January 2, 1898 page 1. When searching for his obituary use “R. T. Wallace.” Also note that in the caption his date of death is listed as June but it should be January. Mr. Wallace might be buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa. Greenwood Cemetery records indicate that an R.T. Wallace is buried here but the dates don’t line up. Nothing could be located for Mrs. Mary Wallace.

Walton, Josiah P
Josiah P. Walton came in 1838 to Geneva, Muscatine County. He was born February 26, 1826 in New Ipswich, New Hampshire. On June 2, 1857 he was married in Claysville, New York. His death occurred November 29, 1899.
During his life, Mr. Walton was the president of the Old Settlers’ Society, a contractor, architect, builder, and scientist. Mrs. J.P. Walton, maiden name Mary Elizabeth Barrows, was born in Claysville, New York June 13, 1834. Her death occurred August 27, 1909.
Mrs. Walton was a leading member of the Old Settler’s Organization of Muscatine and took great pleasure in sharing historical events of Muscatine. Upon her husband’s death she continued to keep weather and meteorological observations that her husband had been recording. It appears that she went by Elizabeth not Mary so be sure to use Elizabeth when searching for her obituary. Warfield, David R
David R. Warfield came to Muscatine in 1837. He was born Eastern Shore, MD Michigan, 1816. In 1841, he married Joanna Steenbergen. He died April 23, 1872. Mrs. Warfield was born in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1817 and died January 8, 1875.
Mr. Warfield was in the real estate business and a stock farmer. The April 26, 1872 Muscatine Journal page 3 carried a sketch about his life. The books Portrait and Biographical Album, Muscatine County, Iowa 1889 page 558 and History of Muscatine County, Iowa, Volume II, 1911, Biographical page 220 (under his son Frank’s name) contain further information regarding Mr. Warfield’s life. Mrs. Warfield’s obituary can be located in the Daily Journal dated January 8, 1875 page 4 using the search term “Mrs. D.R. Warfield.” Both are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa and headstone can be viewed on the website Find a Grave. One other item to note is Mr. Warfield’s place of birth. The caption states “MD Michigan.” All records indicate that he was born in Maryland. One source stated Mr. Warfield’s place of birth as Easton, Maryland and another source stated it as Eastern Shore, Maryland.

Warfield, Major Asbury
Major Asbury Warfield came to Muscatine in 1837. On November 16, 1811 he was born in Frederick County, Maryland. He was the railroad ticket and freight agent in Muscatine from 1855-1890. His death occurred October 27, 1894. Mr. Warfield never married.

L. Hartwell Washburn came to Muscatine in 1839. He was born in New York state, July 1832. In 1858 he married his first wife. On July 2, 1904, Jane Harker Parvin became his 2nd wife. Mr. Washburn died May 8, 1916 in Los Angeles, California. He was the son of Zephaniah Washburn.
Mr. Washburn was an attorney. He died in Los Angeles, California. A tribute article about Mr. Washburn can be found in the May 13, 1916 Muscatine Journal on page 12. Washburn, Mrs L H (Louisa Ann Lloyd)
Mrs. L. H. Washburn, nee Louisa Ann Lloyd, was born March 23, 1835 in Norwalk, Ohio. She was the first wife of L. H. Washburn who she married in Norwalk, Ohio, July 4, 1858. Her death occurred in Los Angeles, California August 3, 1903.

Washburn, Mrs Zephaniah (Phebe Parsons)
Mrs. Zephaniah Washburn, nee Phebe Parsons, was born in Verona, Oneida County, New York, November 17, 1799. She died on October 20, 1864.
Please note that the caption spells her name Phebe. This is possibly a misspelling as her name is spelled “Phoebe” in the cemetery records. She is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa and a headstone is shown on the website Find a Grave. No obituary could be located.

Washburn, Zephaniah
Zephaniah Washburn came to Muscatine in 1839. On January 21, 1801 he was born in Chattham, New York. He was married in Verona, New York July 20, 1827. His death occurred in 1888 in Los Angeles, California.
Mr. Washburn was the first mayor of Muscatine. Also, he was a charter member of the Muscatine County Old Settlers’ Association. A death announcement can be found for him in the June 17, 1887 Muscatine Journal page 6.

Weaver, Mrs Singleton (Sarah Clemmons)
Mrs. Singleton Weaver, maiden name Sarah Clemmons, was born in Kentucky, February 1841. Her death occurred September 1864.
In the September 3, 1864 Muscatine Evening Journal page3 a death announcement appeared for Mrs. Singleton. Cemetery records indicate that she is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Weaver, Singleton
In 1852, Singleton Weaver came to Muscatine. He was born in Maryland, September 27, 1827. In December 1861 he married. Mr. Weaver died March 16, 1905.
An obituary for Mr. Weaver can be found in the Muscatine Journal dated March 17, 1905 on page 8. He was a contractor and builder by trade. Cemetery records indicate that he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Webster, Wesley W
Wesley W. Webster came to Muscatine in 1859. He was born in Chester, Ohio September 9, 1835. In 1865, he married Miss Eliza Galbraith of Ohio. He died in California. His wife, Eliza is deceased. He was an old Civil War veteran.
Mr. Webster, was associated with the business Webster & Williams. The business imported and dealt in Scotch, English and Irish granite and manufacturers of marble. An obituary could not be located for Mr. Weber or his wife. However, the book History of Muscatine County, Iowa 1879, Biographical section page 622 has information regarding Mr. Webster’s life.

Weed, Chester and Cora (Cora Chaplin)
Chester Weed came to Muscatine in 1840. He was born in Canton, Connecticut March 16, 1819 and died December 7, 1874 in Muscatine. His wife Cora, maiden last name Chaplin, was born in Quincy, Illinois July 31, 1844. Mrs. Weed died in Muscatine August 2, 1910. This photograph was taken while Chester Weed and his wife Cora were on their wedding tour in Paris in 1873. The couple were married July 31, 1873.
Mr. Weed was in the general mercantile business with his brother-in-law Joseph Bridgeman. Chester Weed’s obituary can be found in the Muscatine Daily Journal December 7, 1874 page 4. There might be additional information in the book History of Muscatine County, Volume II, 1911 Biographical section page 138. On December 26, 2015 the Muscatine Journal published an article about the Weed family which included Dr. Benjamin, Dr. James and Chester. This article can be found on pages A49 and continues on page A52. Mrs. Cora Weed was prominent in musical, literary and social circles. She was the founder of the Fortnightly Club and also helped organize the Musical Union Orchestra. An obituary for Mrs. Weed can be found in both the Muscatine Journal (page 8 August 5, 1910) and the Muscatine News-Tribune (page 8, August 3, 1910). Both are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa and the headstone can be viewed on the website Find a Grave.

Weed, Dr Benjamin
Dr. Benjamin Weed came to Muscatine in 1839. On January 25, 1789 he was born in West Granby, Connecticut. Dr. Weed died on March 5, 1846. Ann Seymour was Dr. Benjamin Weed’s wife. She was a descendant of Jane Seymour, wife of Henry III of England.
Dr. Weed was one of the early doctors in Muscatine. He practiced medicine until his death. An obituary could not be located for Dr. Benjamin Weed or his wife. However, there is some information in the book History of Muscatine County, Volume II, 1911 Biographical section page 138. This page has information about his son Chester but Dr. Weed is included in the biographical sketch. On December 26, 2015 the Muscatine Journal published an article about the Weed family which included Dr. Benjamin, Dr. James and Chester. This article can be found on pages A49 and continues on page A52. Cemetery records indicate that Dr. Benjamin Weed is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Weed, Dr James
Dr. James Weed came to Muscatine in 1839. On December 26, 1813 he was born in Canton, Ohio. His marriage occurred in Muscatine March 14, 1847. On April 20, 1904 Dr. Weed died.
Dr. James Weed was a doctor and dentist who turned his interests to farming. He raised nursery stock and fruit trees on his farm which was called the Iowa Pomological and Horticultural Gardens. In May 1899, Mr. Weed and his wife donated 63 acres of land to the city of Muscatine for a park. The area was named “Weed Park” in honor of its donors. Weed Park is still a favorite location in Muscatine, Iowa.

Weed, Mrs James (Mary Swift)
Mrs. James Weed, maiden name Mary Swift, was born in Yates, New York January 22, 1828. Mrs. Weed died February 16, 1908. She was the daughter of Thomas and Marcia St. John Swift.
In May of 1899, Mrs. Weed and her husband Dr. James Weed donated 63 acres of land to the City of Muscatine. This area was called “Weed Park” in honor of its donors and is still a popular location in Muscatine, Iowa. Furthermore, she was instrumental in the organization of the Weed Park Club and served as President. An obituary can be located in the February 17, 1908 Muscatine Journal on page 1. She is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa, and her headstone is shown on the website Find a Grave.

Whicher, Judge Stephen
Judge Stephen Whicher came to Muscatine in 1839 from Dayton, Ohio. He was born in Rochester, Vermont May 4, 1798. In 1826, Judge Whicher married. He died in Iowa City, Iowa February 13, 1856.
When Mr. Whicher arrived in Muscatine in 1839 there were two lawyers, he became the third. In 1839-40, at the time of the Missouri War, Mr. Whicher was appointed by Governor Lucas as one of the commissioners to arrange terms for peace. At one time, he was the District Attorney for the United States. An obituary could not be located for Judge Whicher but these books might be helpful, Portrait & Biographical Album, Muscatine County, 1889 page 371 and History of Muscatine County, Iowa Volume I, 1911 pages 371-373. Mrs. Stephen Emerson Whicher, maiden name Anna H. Meason, was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. She came to Muscatine in 1852. Her death occurred May 23, 1919. She was the daughter of Judge and Mrs. George Meason.

White, Lieutenant George R
Lieutenant George R. White came to Muscatine in 1855. He was born in Windsor, Vermont on May 19, 1831. His marriage took place on September 28, 1858. He died July 31, 1899. He was a Civil War veteran.

White, Mrs George R (Maria Marsey Humphreys)
Mrs. George R. White, maiden name Maria Marsey Humphreys, was born in Canton, Connecticut September 28, 1837. Her death occurred April 5, 1914. She was the daughter of Sereno and Electa Humphreys.
An obituary for Mrs. White appeared in the Muscatine News-Tribune April 6, 1915 page 6. Her obituary mentioned that she is descended from a family that was famous in both English and American history. For instance, her relative Simon Humphreys was the fourth signer of the Declaration of Independence. Mrs. White was a member of the Twentieth Century Club of Muscatine. She is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa and her headstone can be viewed on the website Find a Grave. Also note that the year of her death is 1915 not 1914 as the caption states. In addition, her middle name in her obituary is spelled “Marcia.”

White, Mrs William (Helen Wilkie)
Mrs. William White, maiden name Helen Wilkie, was born in Paisley, Scotland and married in Paisley Scotland. She was born July 11, 1819 and died July 22, 1885. She was a milliner (est. 1851.)
Mrs. White was in the millinery business. There were several advertisements that appeared in the newspaper regarding her business. An example of her advertisement can be found in the July 3, 1885 page 1 Daily Journal. Mrs. White’s obituary appeared in the Muscatine Journal July 24, 1885 page 8. Her name appeared in the Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa records.

White, William
William White came to Muscatine in 1851. He was born in Paisley, Scotland November 18, 1817 and died in Muscatine on June 18, 1893. Mr. White was married in Paisley, Scotland.
Mr. White was in the millinery business. His obituary appeared in the Muscatine News-Tribune June 20, 1893 page 4. His name appeared in the Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa records.

Wilhelm, Joseph
Joseph Wilhelm came to Muscatine in 1851. He was born Palmyra Dauphin County, Pennsylvania April 15, 1815. He married in Muscatine in 1857. August, 1914 was when his death occurred.
Mr. Wilhelm owned a farm about three miles north of Muscatine. An obituary appeared in the August 3, 1914 Muscatine Journal on page 8. Cemetery records indicate that he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Wilhelm, Mrs. Joseph (Barbara Funk)
Mrs. Joseph Wilhelm, maiden name Barbara Funk, was born in February 1837 and died October 13, 1882. She came to Muscatine in 1850. Abram and Magdalena Funk were her parents.
Mrs. Wilhelm is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa and her headstone can be viewed on the website Find a Grave. An obituary could not be found. In addition, other sources have her father’s name as “Abraham” not “Abram” as it appears in the caption.

Williams, Judge Joseph
Judge Joseph Williams came to Muscatine in 1838. He was born in Huntington, Pennsylvania December 8, 1801. In 1827, Joseph married Mary Rogers Meason. The marriage took place in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. Both died in Fort Scott, Kansas in 1870. He died March 31 and she died September 10.
Judge Williams was named Chief Justice of Iowa from 1846-48. Later he would regain this position and serve in this capacity until 1855. An obituary appeared in the March 31, 1870 Muscatine Evening Journal page 4. No obituary could be located for Mrs. Williams. Additional information can be found in the book History of Muscatine County, Iowa Volume 1, 1911 pages 365-369. Judge and Mrs. Williams are both buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa and their headstone can be viewed on the website Find a Grave.

Willmering, George W
George W. Willmering was born in Germany and came to Muscatine in 1838. In 1848, he married Theresa Daterman. The marriage took place in Muscatine. He died in 1873.

Witter, Professor Finley M
Professor Finley M. Witter came to Muscatine in 1864. He was born near South Bend, Indiana September 15, 1839. On July 18, 1867 he married Miss Hattie H. Cook, daughter of George and Sarah Cook. He died in Biloxi, Mississippi October 29, 1909.
Professor Witter played an important part in organizing the school system in Muscatine. He was the first principal of the High School and would become City Superintendent of Schools for more than 25 years. His obituary can be found in the October 30, 1909 Muscatine Journal page 5. When searching for his obituary use the search term “F. M. Woods, Mrs Alex (Rebecca Barber)
Mrs. Rebecca Woods, maiden last name was Barber. She came to Muscatine in 1848. In August of 1819 she was born in Madison County, New York. Her death occurred on March 22, 1900. Rebecca was married twice. Her first husband, John Fulton died in 1848. Her second husband, Alex Woods died in 1871.
According to Mrs. Wood’s obituary she owned a small farm. Her obituary can be found in the March 24 Muscatine Journal page 1. Cemetery records indicate that she is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Woodward, Judge William G. (With son Will) (2)
Judge William G. Woodward came to Muscatine in 1839. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts May 20, 1808. On May 10, 1834 he was married. His death occurred February 24, 1871. His son Will is shown with him in this copy of a daguerreotype by C. Weed.
In 1855 Judge Woodward was elected to the Supreme Court of Iowa and served 6 years. The book History of Muscatine County, Iowa Volume I, 1911 page 371 has additional information about his career. Judge Woodward is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa and his headstone is shown on the website Find a Grave.
As for William, his son, he served in the Civil War but after 21 months was discharged due to ill health. In 1865, he accepted a Lieutenancy with the 3rd U.S. Infantry assigned to western frontier posts on the plains. On June 27, 1888 he married Miss Judith Chambers in Muscatine. W. Green Worsham came to Muscatine in 1842 (Phelps and Worsham). He was born in Kentucky. His marriage occurred in North Carolina. On July 16, 1867 he died. In early 1840, he was a stage driver.

In the caption above, “Phelps and Worsham” refers to a livery stable that it is assumed he was associated with.

Wright Sr., Mrs William P (Formerly Mrs Clark)
Mrs. William P. Wright Sr., was formerly Mrs. Clark. She was born in North Carolina and came to Muscatine in 1846. She is deceased.
According to the obituary located for Mrs. Wright her maiden name was Nancy Daniels prior to marriage. There is no reference to her being married to someone with the last name of “Clark.” Furthermore, Nancy is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa and her headstone reads that she was married to William. For more information her obituary can be located in the May 18, 1880 Muscatine Journal page 3 or the June 1, 1880 Muscatine Daily Journal page 4. Possibly this is a former or future wife of William P. Wright Sr. Mr. Wight’s obituary did not contain his wife’s name.

Wright Sr., William P
William P. Wright Sr., came to Muscatine in 1836. He settled in Montpelier Township. In 1824, he was born in Cumberland County, Kentucky. At the age of 81 he passed away.
Mr. Wright’s obituary can be located in the Muscatine Journal November 7, 1905. Records indicate that he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa however the cemetery record book has listed his middle initial with a “B” not a “P”. The middle initial “P” is correct.

Zeigler, John
John Zeigler first came to Muscatine in 1839. He was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania August 29, 1803. He died August 27, 1883. In Butler County, Pennsylvania he married Miss Sarah Hoffa. She died September 1857.
An obituary could not be located for Mr. Zeigler. However, there is information in the book Portrait and Biographical Album Muscatine County, Iowa 1889 page 184 regarding his life.

Zeigler, Will
Will Zeigler (baking powder manufacturer) came to Muscatine in 1848. On September 1, 1843 he was born in Shelby County, Missouri. In 1863, he moved to New York and eventually was married there in 1886. He died May 23, 1905 in Noroton, Connecticut. Mr. Zeigler was the step-son of Conrad Brandt.
As noted in the caption Mr. Zeigler was a baking powder manufacturer. His obituary can be located in the May 24, 1905 Muscatine Journal on page 1.
